Helping Ryedale Charities Together
Monday, 12th December 2011
For one week in October 2011, six Ryedale Solicitors took part in the Ryedale Charities Together Make A Will Week campaign.
During the week, people could make a Will at a special rate and at the same time support eight worthwhile local charities.
Chris Walton, a legal advisor for Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors based at our Malton office was very happy to take part in the Ryedale Charities Together Make A Will Week and showed his and the firms support by raising £310 for Ryedale Charities Together during the week.
“During Ryedale Charities Together Make A Will week, we gave our services free of charge and wrote the Wills in return for the clients giving a donation to Ryedale Charities Together. We were very proud to support and know that by being involved we have helped to raise much needed funds for Ryedale Charities Together.” said Chris Walton.
Rachel Popham, Development Worker for Ryedale Charities Together, said “All the charities involved in Ryedale Charities Together are very grateful to Chris Walton from Crombie Wilkinson in Malton, who not only raised £310 for our cause by writing wills, but also took the time to discuss the scheme and give us valuable advice and ensured representatives from the firm were available to appear in our publicity photographs.”
General Overview from Ryedale Charities Together
Ryedale Charities Together ran our third Will Week in October – and it was our most successful yet. There are still one or two donations to come, but it is already clear that our Will Week will raise over £3,000!
All six firms of solicitors working in Ryedale generously supported us and it has been very heartening in difficult times to have such great support from both the solicitors who gave their time and the people who gave donations.
Several people gave donations in excess of the amount we had asked for and also spoke appreciatively of the support that they or friends and family had had from the charities involved in the Ryedale Charities Together partnership.
The group involves eight charities -
Ryedale Carers Support – organising a service using trained volunteers to provide respite for carers; Sight Support Ryedale - providing support and information for people who are blind or partially sighted; Ryedale Special Families - supporting families of children with disabilities; Next Steps - helping people with mental health problems in a variety of ways; Helmsley Walled Garden - organising a horticultural therapy scheme; Acorn Community Care - providing support, training and sheltered work opportunities for vulnerable adults with learning disabilities; Ryedale Community Transport - organising a variety of schemes to meet rural transport needs and Ryedale Voluntary Action [RVA] - providing services and representation for the voluntary and community sector.
All our charities were founded in, are based in, and work in, Ryedale and therefore have no access to the fund raising potential of a large town - or regeneration grants. Each of the charities is totally independent, not supported by statutory bodies or linked to any of the major national charities. We have been working together for a number of years to help offset some of these disadvantages and our Will Weeks are a major part of our local, Ryedale focussed, fund-raising strategy.
In addition to raising money through donations, we hope that the publicity generated will help to raise local people’s awareness of our small, purely Ryedale charities and encourage them to think about leaving a ‘local legacy’ to either the partnership or individual organisations.
We are in the process of creating leaflets to display in solicitors offices in order to publicise this further.
