Why we need to check your ID and how the process works.

Why are you asking for my ID?

By law, all solicitors must check the identity of their clients before carrying out legal work. These checks help prevent fraud and financial crime and protect both you and us.

ID checks are a standard requirement across the legal sector – similar to the checks carried out by banks and estate agents.

Why ID checks are important

We carry out ID checks to:

  • Comply with the law
    • Solicitors are legally required to verify client identities under the UK’s anti‑money laundering regulations.
  • Protect you and your money
    • Checking ID helps ensure we are dealing with the correct person and reduces the risk of identity theft or fraud.
  • Prevent financial crime
    • These checks support national efforts to prevent money laundering and other criminal activity.
  • Meet professional standards
    • Our regulator, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), requires us to know who we are acting for and to act with integrity.

What this means for you

  • Everyone is checked – this does not mean you are suspected of wrongdoing.
  • Your information is kept confidential and handled in line with data protection laws (including GDPR).
  • We cannot start work on your matter until ID checks are complete.

Providing your ID promptly helps avoid delays.

What documents will I need?

In most cases, we’ll ask for:

  • Photo ID (for example, a valid passport or driving licence).
  • Proof of address (such as a recent utility bill or bank statement).

For matters involving larger sums of money (for example, buying or selling property), you may also be asked to show where funds have come from, such as:

  • Bank statements
  • Payslips
  • Inheritance or savings documents.

This is a legal requirement and applies to all law firms.

How can my ID be checked?

You can choose the option that suits you best:

Electronic ID check

We’ll send you a secure eCOS link so you can complete your ID check online, at a time that suits you.

  • No need to visit an office.
  • No paperwork to print or return.

Manual ID check

If you prefer, you can bring your documents to one of our offices.

  • We’ll let you know exactly what documents to bring.
  • Our team will certify them for you.
