What Is Family Mediation?
Family Mediation is a process where you sort out family disputes with the support of a trained family mediator to assist you in talking about your family and what’s best for them. This service can be especially needed following a separation, where parents need to reach an agreement on arrangements for children and finances for example.
A family mediator helps keep the discussion on topic, working through often difficult situations to reach a compromise for everyone involved.
How does family mediation work?
You will attend a meeting or series of meetings with your former partner or family member over several weeks. At each meeting, the family mediator will help you discuss whatever issues are at hand and take steps to defuse any conflict.
Although the mediator will usually be a qualified family lawyer, their role is not to provide legal advice or to take sides. If you are able to come to an agreement at the end of mediation, the mediator will put your agreement in writing (called a Memorandum of Understanding). However, you will not be forced to agree to anything you are not happy with.
In mediation you talk, listen and decide.
Why choose family mediation?
Mediation is a great way to resolve family issues without having to go to court. Many people find the idea of court proceedings daunting because of the cost, the idea of conflict, and the risk that a judge will make an unsuitable decision on their behalf. For these reasons, the court process can be quite stressful, particularly where children are involved.
Family mediation is designed specifically to take away that stress by providing a neutral environment where you can be open about your requirements and feelings. The family mediator’s job is not to act like a judge but to help you and your former partner or family member reach an agreement without any unnecessary conflict.
Trying mediation doesn’t mean you won’t be able to go to court if you need to. You can even use mediation if court proceedings are ongoing – it is never too late to try to settle amicably
How Our Family Mediation Solicitors Can Help You?
Family mediation means you stay in control of all the decisions you need to make and we are more than a lawyer led mediation service. Amongst our skilled family law team, we have Lucinda Ross, who qualified as a Family Mediator in 2024 and is currently working towards accreditation.
Lucinda is a member of Resolution, an organisation dedicated to helping families sort out issues with minimal stress.
At a time when you think there is nowhere else to turn, family mediation could be the answer. If you’re separating or getting a divorce, mediation is a proven way to calmly discuss arrangements with your partner or other family members. Communication is key and our mediators are here to make that easier, without the added stress of going to Court.
With our family mediation service, we adopt a friendly, welcoming and approachable manner to our mediation services, combining our expert knowledge in family law matters. As mediators we cannot give clients legal advice but we can give them legal information and ensure they have up to date information when making decisions.
How much does family mediation cost?
Family mediation is generally cheaper than court proceedings. How much it will cost will ultimately depend on the individual circumstances of your case and largely dependent on the number of sessions needed which can usually be 1 to 3 with 1 to 3 sessions being usual.
We always aim to be open and transparent about our pricing. If you would like to request a family mediation quote, please give us a call or fill in our online enquiry form.
