HMO Licencing Update

  • Posted

From 1st October 2018 the rules for Licencing Houses of Multiple Occupation will be tightened.

Any property let to 5 or more people living in 2 or more households will have to be licenced.

This no longer applies to properties of 3 or more stories – it could apply to a bungalow.  If 2 people share a house that generally will not need a licence but once a 3rd housemate moves in a licence is needed.  This can apply to a house converted into flats.

There are minimum size requirements for bedrooms.

If you think this may apply to you please check the requirements for the local authority area your property is in. For York it is https://www.york.gov.uk/info/20097/private_landlords_and_tenants/1083/house_in_multiple_occupation_hmo_licences

If you would like Landlord & Tenant advice, please contact our Dispute Resolution team at our York office on 01904 624185.
